Premise
The Enterprise has the
honour of hosting important peace talks with the Legarans, and one of the
Federation's most esteemed ambassadors, Sarek is the spearhead of the negotiations.
But Sarek's mental health begins to fail him at a crucial time, putting all at
risk on the ship.
Comments
This was the first in an array of
TNG / TOS crossovers, but this remains the most emotionally powerful. We all
recall the stern faced, logical Sarek, but here he is reduced to a pitiable emotional
wreck. The performances of Lenard and Stewart are stunning. It's wonderful to
see two acting greats such as these share the screen. It's not all character examination and
severity, it really is a marvelously moody piece with some memorable moments for
the regular crew, such as Picard and Riker having a massive public argument on
the bridge, and that bar fight. But this was the beginning of a sad
decline for one of Trek's most favourite guest characters, and for Lenard and
Stewart a highlight in both their acting careers.

Soundbites:
Without Sakkath, Sarek slips over the edge:
Picard: "Sarek of Vulcan would never be afraid of looking straight at something he did not want to see !"
Sarek: "I warn you! Your efforts to discredit me will not succeed !"
Picard: "Sarek of Vulcan never confuted what he wanted with the truth."
Sarek: "I WILL NOT BE SPOKEN TO IN THIS MANNER."
Picard: "I hear anger in your voice...."
Picard: "It would be illogical for a Vulcan to show anger !! It would be illogical, ILLOGICAL, ILLOGICAL, ILLOGICAL !!!!"
-
Watch Stewart's performance and be amazed:
Picard: "NOOO!!! It is....It is....wrong, IT IS WRONG !! A life time of discipline washed away, and in its place....hahaha.....hmph.....Bedlam, BEDLAM !!!....I am so old, there is nothing left but dry bones....and dead friends. Oh....tired, oh so tired."
Dr. Crusher "It will pass, all of it. Just another hour or so, you're doing fine just hold on...."
Picard: "NO ! This weakness DISGUSTS ME !! I HATE IT !! Where is my logic?......I am betrayed by....desires...oh I want to feel, I want to feel...everything. But I am a Vulcan, I MUST FEEL NOTHING!!! Give me back my control !!!!!"
Dr. Crusher "Jean-Luc!!"
Picard: "Perrin....I wanted to give you so much more, I wanted to show you such...tenderness. But that is not our way.....Spock....Amanda....Did you know.....Perrin, can you know...how much I....Love you...I do....LOVE YOU !!!!"
Trekmania Sound Archive:
Riker: "I don't understand this, everyone is protecting Sarek, his wife, Mendrossen....even you!"
Picard: "What will you have me do? March down there and destroy the man!"
Riker: "The mission with the Legarans cannot be carried out with Sarek in this condition!"
Picard: "I KNOW THAT !!"
Riker: "THEN TELL HIM THAT THERE IS NO WAY !!!"
Picard: "DON'T YOU TELL ME WHAT DO TO !!!!!" |
# 34. CAPTIVE PURSUIT

Aired 1993
Stardate Unknown
Guest Cast
Tosk Scott MacDonald

Premise
The very first visitors to
traverse from the Gamma Quadrant through the Bajoran wormhole cause all manner
of chaos as they hunt 'Tosk', prey they must capture at all costs.
Comments
Although TNG found it hard to
establish a solid footing in the early days, DS9 had no such problem. The first
season has some good episodes that still stand well today, and indeed, I've
listed a DS9 first season episode in this section's top ten. The last few pages
later in this section cover the last ten episodes, which define, in my opinion,
Trek's top ten all time greats. But this was an early triumph for DS9, showing
that it's characters were having little trouble settling into place. Tosk
himself remained enigmatic to the end, and the hunters seemed honourable and
truly believed their cause a just one. There's some nice buddy buddy moments between
Tosk and O'Brien to enjoy, and a touching sense of sympathy for their cause. Add
an iron fisted Sisko showing his colours, and some cool aliens
with some nifty transporters and you have a winner.

Soundbites:
The Hirogen have less respect for their prey:
Sisko: "I have no tolerance for the abuse of any lifeform." |
Hunter: "ABUSE ! We honour Tosk. They are the symbol of all that is noble and courageous. They train and condition themselves all their lives, for this event."
