OTHER RACES
This is a collection of information on the key minor races seen on Star Trek over the years....
| Blue Races = Federation members |
| Green Races = Affiliates |
| Grey Races = Non-aligned |
| Red Races = Hostile |
![]() |
ANDORIANS: One of the founding members of the Federation, the Andorians
possess a similar history to Humans, being violent and territorial, but would also
consider their race to be deeply emotional and passionate. First seen in: 'Journey to Babel' -TOS season II (in regards to Trek chronology, first seen in 'The Andorian Incident' -ENT season I') |
![]() |
ANGOSIANS: Usually considered non-violent, Angosian
authorities were responsible for genetically and chemically engineering soldiers to fight
in their Tarsian Wars. But the process was irreversible, and the 'super soldiers' were
considered outcasts and criminals that could not function or co-exist alongside the normal
population of Angosian society, and as such were forced to be permanently confined to a
penal settlement on an Angosian moon.
Seen in: 'The Hunted' -TNG season III |
![]() |
BAJORANS: First contacted by the Federation whilst under the occupation of Cardassian
forces the Bajorans have forged close diplomatic ties with the Federation over the
last few years. The Bajorans are a highly spiritual society, with a complex
religion based around the Prophets, a mysterious extra-dimensional group of
entities that reside within the Bajoran Wormhole. (For more info, see Cardassian Union)
First seen in 'Ensign Ro' -TNG season V |

BA'KU:
The Ba'ku were at one time a violent and
fragmented people. But a group of disillusioned Ba'ku left the
homeworld in the mid twenty first century and colonised a remote world in
the Briar Patch. This planet was endowed with life giving metaphasic
particles, and many Ba'ku could enjoy extreme longevity and ever
lasting health. Certain Ba'ku were banished from the community, and
these resentful individuals later became known as the Son'a, who
allied themselves with high ranking Starfleet officials who sought to take
control of the Ba'ku world to use the properties of the particles
for Federation purposes. Other Pics: 2 Seen in 'Star Trek: Insurrection'. |
![]() |
BENZITES: Civilization from the planet Benzar. Possessing highly
efficient and logical minds, the Benzites are a great asset to the Federation, and
play an important role in multiple design and engineering fields. Many of this race look
alike to non Benzites, this is particularly in the case where two may derive from
the same 'geo-structure'. Their M-Class environment incompatibility had in the past been a
cumbersome disadvantage to many Benzites working in the Federation and Starfleet,
as they were resigned to wearing specially adapted respiratory apparatus. Medical
breakthroughs have since bypassed the need for this equipment.
First seen in 'Coming of Age' -TNG season I |
| BETAZOIDS: Telepathically gifted race of the planet Betazed.
The majority of Betazoids working in Starfleet use their abilities in specialized
fields ranging from security, investigation and counselling. Certain races are known to be
'unreadable' to Betazoids, specifically the Ullians, Breen and Ferengi,
possibly due to their unique four-lobed brain configurations. Most Betazoids would
exhibit their first telepathic skills in adolescence, but some Betazoid children
which develop telepathic capability at a premature age would usually never grow up to lead normal lives, as
this defective aberration causes great confusion and discomfort, and invariably requires
extensive therapy. Other Pics: 2 First seen in 'Encounter at Farpoint' -TNG season I |
|
![]() |
BOLIANS: Hailing from the ninth planet of the Bolarus system, the Bolians
are blue skinned humanoids with a distinctive raised cranial ridge. Bolians
are known to possess extremely peculiar blood chemistry, and posses a rigid, cartilaginous
lining on their tongues. It is Bolian custom, of ancient origin, to engage in
assisted suicides to alleviate 'unnecessary' suffering if an individual is in a state
beyond the help of medical science. Such an act is considered highly moral. Other Pics: 2 First seen in 'Conspiracy' -TNG season I |
![]() |
BREEN: Mysterious race of which very little is known. Their homeworld is
thought to be a icy outer-system world, and as a result Breen individuals utilize
specialised refrigerated bio-suits to operate in other climates and environments. The Breen
are believed to employ cloaking technology to camouflage their vessels, and
biological/disruptor type weaponry. In the early 2370's, the Breen allied
themselves with The Dominion, and launched a highly
audacious and shocking attack on Earth. The resulting bombardment caused significant
damage to Starfleet headquarters in San Francisco, but no Breen vessel survived the
assault.
First mentioned in 'Hero Worship' -TNG season V. First seen in 'Indiscretion' -DS9 season IV |
![]() |
BYNARS: Highly developed civilization of the planet Bynaus. The Bynars
are considered technologically advanced, and the very crux of their society surrounds
their planetary computer network, to which each individual 'pairing' of Bynars are
linked. A typical Bynar pair are telepathically and electronically linked for rapid
data swap and interchange, and work and operate together as if one unit. Other Pics: 2 Seen in '11001001' -TNG season I |
![]() |
EL-AURIANS: Extremely long lived humanoid civilization, made
nearly extinct by a Borg attack in the late twenty third
century. Little was known about the assailants at the time, but the attack was swift and
savage, and many El-Aurian refugees were duly scattered across the quadrant. The
tragic ordeal of the Borg invasion is an integral component of the El-Aurian
psyche, and as such, many of this species are considered wise and highly learned in
spiritual and emotional matters, and make excellent listeners and advisers.
First seen in 'The Child' -TNG season II |
![]() |
GORN: Reptilian species of warriors who have long maintained
territorial disputes with the Federation. Planet Cestus III was a central point of
contention between the two powers in the 23rd century. Considering this location as part
of their own space, the Gorn sought to eradicate the Federation presence in this
system with the destruction of its outpost, but on discovery that the incident had been
founded on a mere misunderstanding, the two sides entered a period of cooperation and
diplomacy, and the Federation were eventually granted colonisation rights in the Cestus
system. Other Pics: 2 Seen in 'Arena' -TOS season I |
![]() |
HIROGEN: Completely unknown to the Federation, this Delta Quadrant race
was discovered by the USS Voyager, stranded on the far side of the galaxy. This
advanced species is driven by the desire to hunt and prey on lesser races, or those
considered worthy of the challenge. Hunt 'packs' are controlled by the 'Alpha-Hirogen',
and significant study and analysis of a hunt subject is considered essential in order to
understand the prey, and prevent the 'hunter from becoming the hunted'. Although the Hirogen
are considered to have been technologically sophisticated for many millennia, their
scientific advances have long been exhausted, as all resources are plowed into hunt
expeditions spanning the quadrant.
First seen in 'Hunters' -VOY season IV |
![]() |
JEM'HADAR: These genetically manipulated and specially bred warriors are the
foot soldiers of The Dominion. The Jem'Hadar were modified by the Founders
to be addicted to a substance called ketracel-white, the absence of the chemical ensured
death, so it was provided as a means to secure loyalty. Many Jem'Hadar
would die having never seen the Founders that control them, and the majority would
in fact not live to any advanced age, but those who reach the age of 20 are considered 'Honoured
Elders'. (See The Dominion for more).
First seen in 'The Jem'Hadar' -DS9 season II |
![]() |
KAZON: Socially primitive but technologically sophisticated
warrior species that exist in a highly complex multi-sect social structure. Known together
as 'The Kazon Collective', each sect is controlled by the 'Maje', as they
vie for resources, allies and potential dominance over the other, rival sects. The system
was originally introduced after the Trabe invasion and subjugation, but the Kazon
eventually united, overthrowing their conquerors, and utilizing their spacecraft achieved
technological and military prominence once more. Known sects: Kazon Ogla, Kazon Oglamar, Kazon Hobii, Kazon Mostral, Kazon Nistrim, Kazon Pommar, Kazon Relora. First seen in 'Caretaker' -VOY season I |
![]() |
KES and PRYTT: The Kes and Prytt are the two separate
nation states of the planet Kesprytt III. The Kes maintained a three quarter
majority of the planet's territory, resources and population, while the xenophobic Prytt
remain largely to their own devises as isolationists. Both parties are extremely paranoid,
and suspicion and mistrust of each other is rife. The two sides both employ intense,
widespread security networks, particularly the Prytt who would go to any lengths to
ensure their internal security and national identity had not been compromised. The Kes
application for membership into the Federation in 2370 was suspended, as the planet had
not met certain cultural guidelines and criteria necessary for a successful application,
most notably the lack of a unified world government.
Seen in 'Attached' -TNG season VII |
![]() |
KRENIM: Governed by the Krenim Imperium, this bizarre civilization
has existed at various levels of sophistication and influence in many diverse and
disparate timelines -due to their own foolhardy manipulations of the temporal continuum.
When the Rilnar were eliminated from space-time by a temporal weapon ship
-conceived of by genocidal scientist Annorax, the Krenim people became suddenly
susceptible to a devastating disease. Protected from the effects of time aboard the ship,
Annorax continued for two centuries to try and reverse the damage, with the loss of
billions of lives encompassing multiple civilizations. Various Delta Quadrant military
forces, in conjunction with Starfleet vessel Voyager destroyed the ship, and hence
ended Annorax's campaign. The resulting erasure from history restored the time-line to its
original configuration. Seen in 'Year of Hell part 1 & 2' -VOY season IV |
![]() |
KTARIANS: Elusive, politically non-aligned race of sometimes sinister
intent and motivation. Although normally cooperative in many areas such as trade and
commerce, a group of what was believed to be renegade Ktarians attempted a bold
scheme to gain control of the Federation by distributing a series of psychotropically
addictive games into Starfleet circles. It was hoped the game's effect would render them
highly susceptible to control and suggestion, allowing the Ktarians to utilize
Starfleet resources and hardware in their planned expansion. The involvement of the Ktarian
government in this was not clear at the time, but their objectives were thwarted by the
crew of the first starship on which they tested the device. Other Pics: 2 First seen in 'The Game' -TNG season V |
![]() |
MALCORIANS: A recently discovered race in the early stages of warp
development. Although rated fairly low on the scale of technological development,
Starfleet were forced to hasten the contact scenario when an undercover Starfleet officer
was captured during a surveillance operation on their homeworld of Malcor III.
Although undergoing many social reforms and technological breakthroughs, particularly in
the fields of interstellar propulsion, it was adjudged that Malcorian society was
far from ready in accepting information on alien reality, and Starfleet decided on a
strategic retreat, but left the possibilities open for a return to revaluate the Malcorian
situation in a few years.
Seen in 'First Contact' -TNG season IV |
![]() |
MALONS: This Delta Quadrant race has a fragile economy, and to supplement
costs, various waste disposal short cuts were employed to dispose of their dangerous toxic
waste, generated by their antimatter power generator system used in industry. Although
these protocols were a necessity to the people, their chosen location for the dumping was
a 'void', situated on the other side of a spatial vortex. This void though was the domain
of the 'night beings', a species under serious threat due to the poisonous theta
radiation of the Malon's endless toxic pollution of their space. After the Vortex
was sealed by the Voyager, it forced the Malon to seek other, safer methods
for the disposal of their industrial waste. Other Pics: 2 First seen in 'Night' -VOY season V |
![]() |
MINTAKANS: Passive bronze age proto-vulcanoid civilization of
the third planet in the Mintaka system. After a group of Federation scientists were
inadvertently revealed to the primitive Mintakans in 2366, sudden first contact and
the resulting socio-psychological pollution was unavoidable. Although still far from even
the Industrial Age, the highly logical and analytical Mintakans seemed to have
comfortably accepted a rudimentary understanding of interstellar reality and off-world
lifeforms.
Seen in 'Who Watches The Watchers?' -TNG season III |
![]() |
MIZARIANS: Inhabiting the second planet in their system, the Mizarians are
well known for their passive, peaceful nature. Offering virtually nothing in the
way of active resistance, their Homeworld has been subjected to several invasions over the
centuries. But the pacifist Mizarian philosophy remains. Other Pics: 2 Seen in 'Allegiance' -TNG season III |
![]() |
NAUSICAANS: Large, quarrelsome and thug-like race with little
or no political angle or agenda. Often, members of this species are seen to be nomadic
desperadoes, but some are employed as mercenaries, or as muscle by other races, for, with
more than simple security, an accompanying Nausicaan heavy can successfully provide a
significant intimidation factor. Other pics: 2 First mentioned in 'Samaritan Snare' -TNG season II. First seen in 'Tapestry' -TNG season VI |
![]() |
OCAMPA: Delta Quadrant race, native to their homeworld Ocampa. Members of
this race have an exceptionally short life span, rarely exceeding ten Earth years. Ocampan
young are born at an advanced stage of development from sacks that form on an Ocampan female during the elogium.
What remains of the highly telepathic Ocampa race live in large subterranean
structures, constructed, and regularly provisioned, by the 'Caretaker', a powerful
extra-galactic entity whose people were believed to have inadvertently caused serious
ecological damage to the Ocampan surface centuries earlier. The Caretaker remained
to look after the broken Ocampan civilization.
First seen in 'Caretaker' -VOY season I |
![]() |
PAKLEDS: Mysterious and highly elusive race of which little
information is known. It is generally believed that the Pakleds are seriously
primitive in many areas, and have obtained advanced technology by trickery and subterfuge.
Considered to be underdeveloped intellectually, the Pakleds have still successfully
gained technically impressive expertise from seemingly fraudulent means.
First seen in 'Samaritan Snare' -TNG season II |
![]() |
Q: Any individual entity of the extra-dimensional Q Continuum. Akin to actual
godhood, the omnipotent Q are capable of virtually any feat of power. The
intimidating Q once put the Human race on trial for being primitive and 'savage',
and since the 'provisional' acquittal Humans in particular have been the brunt of many Q
induced pranks, schemes and tests. Certain Q are known to tease and torment lesser
races for their own pleasure, and as such the Q have been of significant concern to
the Federation.
First seen in 'Encounter at Farpoint' -TNG season I |
![]() |
SHAPESHIFTERS: Also
known as Changelings, this remarkable race are collectively known as The
Founders, the controlling entity of the Dominion. Long ago they
genetically fashioned the Jem'Hadar and the Vorta as the driving
mechanisms behind their military and tactical force. A principle bonding,
and communicative ritual which embodies the Founders' existence is The
Great Link, where in fluidic form these beings merge into one. Having a
distinct loathing of chaos and disorder, the Shapeshifters created a
dominant controlling force centuries ago and formed the Dominion. This
vast, military power has exerted its influence on hundreds, even thousands
of races in their native Gamma Quadrant, and recently expressed an
interest in exerting that influence in the Alpha Quadrant. (See The
Cardassian Union and The Dominion for more
information)
First seen in 'Emissary' -(ODO) DS9 season I, and then in 'The Search' -DS9 season III |
![]() |
SHELIAK: The
Sheliak race fall under the Federation's type R3 classification. Being
extremely arrogant and reclusive they have little respect for neighbouring
species, and have long held territorial disputes with the Federation. The
2255 Treaty of Armens strictly defines their borders with the
Federation's,
and each of the past diplomatic dealings have either been settled by
treaty conditions and parameters, or by third party arbitrations.
Other Pics: 2 Sheliak Warship Seen in 'The Ensigns of Command' -TNG season III |
![]() |
SON'A: The
Son'a were once the disillusioned outcasts of the utopian Ba'ku
colony on their world in the Briar Patch. These separatists were forced to
flee the planet as they did not conform to Ba'ku society. Having
lost the unique rejuvenating properties of the world's metaphasic field
they became susceptible like everyone to the ravages of time. Seeking to
usurp those who had exiled them, they gained the support of certain
Federation officials, who in return would have access to the marvels of
the planet's special nature.
Seen in 'Star Trek: Insurrection' |
![]() |
SPECIES - 8472: Virtually
nothing is known about this unique species by Federation exobiologists,
but what little information that has been forthcoming has been provided by
Delta Quadrant stranded starship USS Voyager, who'd been
unfortunate enough to have had several compromising encounters. Known to
hail from 'Fluidic space', a realm existing beyond the traditional
spatial continuum, they have for some had military confrontations with the
Borg - whose designation for the race was adopted by the Voyager crew.
Most alarming and potentially threatening of all is their general
technical superiority over the Borg. Utilizing biological weaponry and
spacecraft that were in fact biological organisms in their own right, they
were at first impervious to Federation weapons technology. After forging
an unlikely alliance with the Borg, Voyager's role was seen as a
plot by Galactic species to wipe them out. Answering the call for an
effective weapon against them Voyager scientists adapted Borg nano-probes,
and an offensive strategy was eventually implemented, one in which Species-8472
had little in the way of defence. Any future diplomatic relations with
this race will centre around convincing them that not all galactic races
are hostile towards them.
First seen in 'Scorpion part 2' -VOY season IV |
![]() |
T'LANI: The
T'lani race have a long history of war with neighbouring species
the Kellerun. The Kellerun had been responsible for using a
deadly biogenic weapon called the Harvesters against the T'lani,
and they duly suffered great civilian losses. After a peace was
successfully negotiated, an attempt was made to destroy all remaining Harvester
weapons, and controversially, all those who had scientific knowledge and
experience with the devices.
Seen in 'Armageddon Game' -DS9 season II |
![]() |
TALARIANS: The
Talarians are considered a proud warrior race, but have had to deal
with a several military confrontations with Federation forces due to their
territory neighbouring a number of Federation sectors. This commonly tense
situation was symbolised by the Galen Border Conflicts, which was a
series of clashes over the control of the Galen star system during the mid
twenty fourth century. Being highly centered around a Patriarchal
social doctrine the significantly ritualistic Talarian society
encourages a strict traditional cultural system. Talarian warships
are known to employ less developed weaponry than the Federation, utilizing
neutral particle beam weaponry and Merculite rockets.
(I tend to favour the 'Suddenly Human' look of this race, as opposed to the radically different and canon violating appearance in DS9's 'Improbable Cause') Other Pics: 2 Talarian Warship First seen in 'Suddenly Human' -TNG season IV |
![]() |
TALAXIANS: The Talaxian race is native to far side of
the Delta Quadrant, and was completely unknown until discovered by
stranded starship Voyager in 2371. Several times the Talaxian
race has had to fight off attempts of conquest by adversarial races. But
they had little choice in surrendering to Haakonian Order after the
deployment of a horrific weapon called the metreon cascade. The
weapon wiped out more than quarter of a million colonial Talaxians
residing on Rinax.
First seen in 'Caretaker' -VOY season I |
![]() |
TALOSIANS: The
few remaining Talosians were forced to adapt to a subterranean
existence after their world was virtually destroyed by nuclear conflict.
Having nothing of a world or society left, they became dependent on the
realm of illusion, facilitated by an ancient technology first used in
generations past. Because of their bland existence they resorted to
capturing passing space vehicles and subjected their victims to becoming
part of their illusions. Captain Christopher Pike resisted the Talosians'
attempts bend his will, and hence demonstrated human incompatibility to a
life of further captivity. First seen in 'The Cage' -TOS first series pilot |
![]() |
TAMARIANS: The
Tamarians, or as they have been known in legend 'The Children of
Tama' are considered one of the most mystifying races the Federation
have yet encountered. This is due merely to their linguistic mechanisms
that prevented verbal communication between the two parties for some time,
and as a result no diplomatic relations could exist. Tradition Universal
Translator technology failed to process or interpret Tamarian speech. From
analysis their language was classified as being purely metaphoric,
alluding to ancient tales and deeds of their mytho-culture. The first
successful communications were established in 2368, when posthumously
renowned Tamarian officer Dathon forced he and fellow
Federation opponent Jean-Luc Picard into a hazardous situation with a
dangerous creature on El-Adrel, helping to finally to forge a bond and
emotional link to finally open the first successful cultural interchange.
Other Pics: 2 Tamarian Ship1 Tamarian Ship 2 Seen in 'Darmok' -TNG season V |
| TELLARITES: The
Tellarites were one of the founding members of the United
Federation of Planets. First contact in the mid twenty second century saw
the Tellarites as culturally developed beings with a distaste
for strong emotion, particularly in the area of sentimentality. They also
have a unique penchant for debate and arguing. In fact on Tellar heated
debates were seen as a sport. Being advanced in many technical fields,
specifically warp mechanics, they were an ideal addition for the fledgling
Federation seeking to employ new technological expertise in design and
engineering for Starfleet.
Other Pics: Tellarite 3 (the latter two pictures are of the redesigned Tellarite seen on 'Enterprise'.) First seen in 'The Journey to Babel' -TOS season II |
|
| No Pic Yet | THOLIANS: Mysterious
race of ambiguous nature and motivation. Being obsessed in the extreme
with territorial resources, disputes with the Federation have been common
place over the years. Recent Tholian incursions included an attack
on a Federation outpost in 2353. The Tholians also had distinct
interests in the development of the Klingon civil war crisis in 2367, and
it was feared by many that they may at any time have intervened. Although
absent from the recent crisis involving the Dominion, a Tholian
Observer was one of the Ambassadors killed at the Antwerp Conference which
was sabotaged by a changeling spy.
(Seen only from the neck up in the one episode, it is still uncertain whether the Tholians have an appearance akin to faceted silicon, or whether that image we know of was due to a helmet or peculiar type if head-gear. Perhaps the new 22nd century series 'Enterprise' will shed some more light on the subject....) Seen in 'The Tholian Web' -TOS season III |
![]() |
TRILL: Species
of distinguished longevity due to being physically joined with a small
vermiform symbiont that resides in an internal pouch in the
abdominal area. The Trill host will invariably share all the
wisdom, knowledge and memories of the symbiont carried from
previous hosts. It is the considerable life span of the symbiont
that this longevity can be interpretted. Potential hosts compete to
receive symbionts, a -process which arbitrated by the Symbiosis
Commission. In many cases, a Trill individual is a merger between the best
qualities and attributes of the host and the symbiont within.
First seen in 'The Host' -TNG season IV |
![]() |
ULLIANS: Telepathic
race with extraordinary ability to tap into an individual's memories,
whether on the surface or hidden. Although the race as a collective whole
had suffered from a series of social problems due to their abilities, by the 24th
century cases such crimes involving 'mental rape' violations had almost completely
disappeared from the general population. Special training was given to
certain Ullians with specific talents and abilities to specialise
in memory retrieval. The goal was to compile an archive of recorded
historical memories and events.
Seen in 'Violations' -TNG season V |
![]() |
VIDIIANS: Delta
Quadrant species which have long been afflicted with a devastating disease
known as The Phage. The complete attacks and destroys various
organs of the Vidiian body, and for two thousand years the race has
collectively sought an effective treatment which would eradicate the
disease. Using the organs from dead bodies to replenish supplies for
transplants, they have recently been forced to abduct living individuals
of various races to harvest their organs. This implemented with advanced
medical technology to make the organs compatible to Vidiian needs.
First seen in 'The Phage' -VOY season I |
![]() |
VORTA: Hailing
from the Gamma Quadrant, the Vorta are long time associates and
representative of The Founders, controlling body of The Dominion.
Specifically cloned and bred by the Founders, they were
genetically engineered to be forever loyal, and to worship them as Gods. Vorta
were also in charge of directing military campaigns carried out by the
Jem'Hadar, and were responsible for the exclusive distribution of the
addictive agent Ketracel-White to Jem'Hadar soldiers who depended
on the substance in order to survive. Modified to possess characteristics
and abilities deemed necessary to their function, they have little sense
of taste as well as undeveloped eyesight, but do have sharp hearing, and are shrewd,
cunning tacticians.
(For more see The Dominion) First seen in 'The Jem'Hadar' -DS9 season II |

VULCANS: Being
one of the most important members of the Federation today, the Vulcans
were the first extraterrestrial species that Humanity as a whole encountered when they
initiated contact with human scientist Zefram Cochrane after his first
warp flight in 2063. The Vulcan mindset has fluctuated over
history. Although being calm, emotionless but compassionate beings in the
modern era, they have a violent and chaotic past. But in ancient times Vulcan
society was transformed by revered philosopher Surak. Certain
factions opposed to his teachings fled the homeworld to begin their own
lineage in the depths of space. These expatriates settled on the world the
Federation call Romulus. (See Romulan Empire).
The Vulcan individual possesses a distinguished sense of clarity of
thought, embodied ultimately by pure logic. Due to the suppression of
natural procreative impulses, they surface naturally roughly every seven
years. The sometimes confusing and destructive symptoms of the mating
instinct are described by the syndrome Pon Farr. The Vulcans
are also a race which possess telepathic abilities. Although direct
telepathy is rarely practiced, Vulcans employ a ritual called a
Mind Meld used to mentally merge two minds.

YRIDIANS: The
Yridians are sellers of information and secrets. Yridians are known to
operate as agents for a variety of races across the Alpha Quadrant, providing
services of espionage, sabotage and assassinations to the highest bidder,
whether Cardassian, Klingon, Federation or Romulan. First seen in 'Birthright part 1' -TNG season VI |

ZAKDORN: Important
Federation member race who specialise in categorization, analysis and
strategic operations for Starfleet and various Federation bodies. First seen in 'Peak Performance' -TNG season II |
