Destroyer type vessel from the early 23rd century. A product of the Advanced Starship Design Bureau at Utopia Planitia, the Atlas Class was a reasonable servant in both research and defence. Only eleven were constructed though, three of which were part of the second phase refitted type, that transformed into the Darwin subclass (see below).

This was a Tactical Cruiser subclass variant that first debuted at the onset of an aborted refit and second production run of the Atlas. Instead a more advanced and more heavily armed version was constructed to cater for extended deep space tactical assignments. Employing a seemingly ancillary third nacelle this in fact provided a distinct advantage for the Darwins, for it significantly extended the potential range of deployments, and in the event of saucer separation it was also designed to render the saucer warp capable.

Footnote
- The Darwin subclass is considered an 'Atlas variant', and so ultimately is still of the Atlas Class. The only visual design difference between the first run Atlases and the Darwin subclass, was the lack of a third nacelle, and the raised deck on the saucer.

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
As this class is only of my own speculation, all specs and stats appearing here are hypothetical. The explanations about this data, such as ship designations, weapons, offensive power etc, see Spec Definitions.
