E. Nellis Chapman was a 22nd Century geneticist who was widely regarded as the finest mind in the field, and responsible for many groundbreaking surges in the genetic sciences. This class vessel, so named after him, was a common frequenter behind the front lines of various minor conflicts and campaigns during the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. It had a simple, yet functional design, with medium armaments and a crew in the region of 230, a large proportion of which were Doctors, nurses and other medical technicians and specialists. Most of these vessels were named after famous physicians of varied types through history, both from Earth and aligned worlds of the Federation. A few are listed.

-You may wonder why the hell as he put three digit registry numbers for late 23rd century ships? Well I wanted to balance things to suggest that during this period there wasn't such a strict registry pattern. We know that Oberth Class definitely isn't pre-Constitution, yet it has three digits in its registries beginning with six. It's possible this was employed for fringe vessels, such as freighters, transports, research ships and possibly hospital ships, such as this class. This is my 'provisional' explanation anyway. If new canon information is disclosed about the registry system, or if someone vehemently protests my theory, I may yet change the above!

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

As this class is only of my own speculation, all specs and stats appearing here are hypothetical. The explanations about this data, such as ship designations, weapons, offensive power etc, see Spec Definitions.
