Utilizing special torpedo technology the USS Voyager brought back with them from their Delta Quadrant exile, the Resistance Class prototype is being specially constructed to fend against Borg attacks. Consisting of four forward and two aft torpedo bays, the Resistance can deliver single burst torpedo hits from both quarters with devastating effect. Using 'quaternary-shift' warp geometry, the Resistance is expected to reach maximum speeds of warp 9.99, faster than any other ship in the fleet, but the price is that it's only very short range. But stationed in the Sol system, it can be quickly scrambled if a Borg incursion is detected, and if Earth is threatened it can intercept much faster than any other ship. Eight ships of this class are planned, and they may end up being stationed at key Federation worlds in the core systems.

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
