This class contributes to Starfleet’s covert battle fleet. In one respect these are not officially normal Starships, but more special ops/battleships. And indeed, Defiant Class vessels have a designation as an ‘Escort ship’, (or 'Corvette' in peace time). It's successes so far have included confrontations with the Borg, Romulans and Dominion/Jem'Hadar forces. Several of the advanced systems used on Defiant Class were experimental, such as ablative armour and Quantum Torpedoes. The former was also speculatively tested on two Rigel Class upgrades during 2365. This addition alone contributed greatly to Defiant Class' immense battlefield prowess. Many know the existence of this armada now, as it is generally no longer considered to be classified. But only few, even in some of the hierarchies of traditional Starfleet circles would know about all the others covert classes…(see Classified Classes -see nav bar at the top if you're using frames, or go here to select)

Footnote *
-The USS Defiant, having been destroyed was replaced by the USS Sao Paulo, which was conveniently renamed USS Defiant... The reason this was done was so that the creators could get away with using stock footage of the old Defiant in supposedly new battle scenes -which weren't, for the battle scenes used in 'What You Leave Behind' were actually originally from 'Sacrifice Of Angels', A real cop-out I thought, especially as this was in the finale. It's unusual enough for a ship to be commissioned that is in the same class as its same-named predecessor, but let alone have the same registry number. It will take some extreme explaining away by us fleet junkies, for it challenges our theories of ship naming and numbering....
Other than the Enterprise and Enterprise-A. the other known example of this dual naming in a class was the two Saratoga's, which were both Miranda Class variants.
Further points regarding Defiant Class
KEY
O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing
*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
