First constructed at Earth Station McKinley (an ancillary construction yard), the prototype Intrepid 4 was first designated as a long range exploration vehicle. It was not the largest or indeed most powerful of ships but was highly resilient, and with retractable nacelles and enhanced warp propulsion systems was extremely fast. When most in this class were first launched they carried 175 Photon Torpedoes, only months later were they recalled for Quantum Torpedo upgrades (except the missing Voyager ;). The prototype was also a Guinea Pig for a speculative addition to IOCs: a type of bio-neural organic gel pack unit, designed to relay and process computer information at new high speeds. Has so far proven a fair success.

* Initially designated 'Planform SV-65', the Advanced Starship Design Bureau began the starship project which become the Intrepid Class in 2361. The eventual design was finalised in 2367, and the first ship to be completed ended up being called Voyager, three months ahead of the official prototype Intrepid 4.

Footnote *

- This information, as well as some of the specification stats comes from Rick Sternbach himself, who, after an unsuccessful attempt to get an official Voyager Technical Manual off the ground, gave these snippets of info on the Intrepid Class to Star Trek Magazine, in April 2002.

- In the Statistics box, where the symbol ^ appears, the value is officially canon.

- I submit the theory that the designated sign 'Planform SV-65' for this class could have an actual canon basis. 'Planform' (old aviation term) simply refers to the initial 'fuselage' shape laid down as construction begins. SV could stand for Space Vehicle, and 65 could refer to this being the 65th starship class. If that is so, I'd have to radically restructure the Stats Board! It's more likely SV is a code prefix for this type of ship, being a 'Cruiser'. So this could be the 65th Cruiser commissioned in Starfleet's history.

Intrepid Variants (used in dominion war efforts)

USS Elkins NCC 74121 Sc See Footnote below
USS Yeager 3 NCC 65674 O See Footnote below
USS Keel NCC 71923 D
USS Dante NCC 69187 Sc

- The Elkins and Yeager are here because they are sub-class variants of the Intrepid Class, but would still hence be noted under the general Intrepid Class bracket. Perhaps they are proto-Intrepids, much like the Nebula variants, and Proto-Excelsiors. They could be one off ships produced prior to the actual Intrepid launch (hence both ships having a lower registry number than the actual final prototype). Or, maybe they're older ships of as yet unknown type, refitted with Intrepid saucers. It's all very unlikely, but we have to explain these Frankenstein freaks somehow... More here.

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
