GUIDE TO THE FLEET: INTRODUCTION

Included within these indices are all Starfleet vessels, and all 'Starship' classes portrayed over the years. One guideline here is that this 'primary fleet' listing is so specified due to the fact that each ship class which is listed and portrayed has appeared visually on screen, or at least has a reasonable canon design, ie Daedalus Class, New Orleans etc. The rest can be found in the Other Classes section.

In the listings, the recognised, canonised vessels which have been represented or mentioned in the Star Trek shows are in Yellow Bold.

Important: You'll notice I've taken many liberties here, filling in gaps and loopholes to make it all jell, by explaining away how such a large fleet might work, and what part each class vessel might play. But I must say, what isn't established fact to the Star Trek Universe is pure fiction; of my own whimsical creation.

Anyway, listed are the various class stats, stating class designation, amount of ships in that class built, length, crew compliment, number of decks, weapons and so forth. The amount of vessels built in that class is a 'best guess' conjectural number, as are the speculated 'remaining in active service' figure, as of 'Trek time' present day - 2378. Also input is the current status of the listed vessel (Destroyed, Operational, Missing etc. -see Key at bottom of class' page). In some cases we know the precise fate of some vessels as portrayed in the shows (destroyed at Wolf 359 etc), the details of their loss are also highlighted in yellow. The order of the various vessels listed appears somewhat chaotic, but are listed somewhat randomly, perhaps in the order of date commissioned, and some of the registries are out of sync -they refer only to the contract code (NCC being -I reckon- an old acronym for Naval Construction Contract or Code). But it must be noted: the shows aren't always particularly continuity conscious when it comes to registries... The dates refer to the first vessel of its class commissioned, to the final vessel of its class decommissioned -(not to continual duration of the class' construction). In blue, 'Flagship' refers to that ship being so (sometimes speculatively) during its time.

If an established ship's name appears in yellow italics, it indicates that the ship's particular class has not been officially established, and has been provisionally designated (by me) as that class. For instance the USS Valiant 1, from 'A Taste of Armageddon' from TOS, was given no class because the vessel was never seen. Some think it apt that it should be designated as a Constitution Class ship. So that's where I've put if for now. A * (yellow asterisk) after the registry similarly indicates that an official registry number has not been given, so an appropriate one has been inserted.

Go here for a run down of all canon starships, in alphabetical order.

Some vessels share the same name as those that have gone before. In this case, a number comes after its name to signify precisely which vessel it is. For instance, USS Defiant 1 was Constitution Class, and USS Defiant 2, from a century later is designated as Defiant Class. Note, that where a vessel shares a name with another, only one, usually the newest one will be in service, also, the numbering system refers to ships commissioned from Daedalus Class onwards, and through which classes are established in Trek lore, with only conjectural acknowledgement given to hypothetical classes and the possible designations of vessels of other older classes that may have existed -those older classes which are mentioned on the 'Other Classes' page. The exception with same named vessels being numbered are the Enterprises, in their case it was decided since the times of the Constitution Classes that there would always be an active Enterprise in the field -having proved to be the most famous and prestigious of all names, so they were given a unique system of lettering, so they could retain the original '1701' registry. The latest Enterprise is designated as Sovereign Class, and is the 6th vessel to bear the name...

I wish to state that I in no way claim to have created or designed any of the pictures here, or conceptual starship class images (unless where stated).
