OTHER CLASSES: INTRODUCTION

On top of the numerous canon ship classes that we know of there are many additional ones that have had passing acknowledgements and references, but of which little is known about. This maybe because the creators did not have the resources to develop and design a brand new class ship, so we'd only have a mention of this class in the episode, but not get to see it on screen. In the TNG episode 'Cause And Effect', a new class design was written into the script, it was designated Soyuz Class, an old 23rd century class ship long since decommissioned. It was hoped a new model could be built to represent this class, but alas they lacked the time and resources to do this before the given deadline, so it was decided to 'amend' and alter their existing model of their (ST II) Miranda Class ship, the Reliant, this is why the two look similar. This is just a general example, but seeing as Soyuz appeared 'on screen' it exists in the Main Fleet listings.

Due to various budgetary restrictions, similar problems have forever been encountered when it came to new class designs. Occasionally we do get to see one, ie Akira (big movie budgets can allow this), and Nova (Voyager's budget was increased due to the wrap of DS9), but the general trend remains. In these cases though, CGI models are now generally used, and it takes similar time, money and effort to develop them.

Physical models of some of these other obscure classes do exist, a number were created for the Wolf 359 graveyard scene, but with the majority we basically have to embellish what information we do have on various class ambiguities, and muddle through best we can until we arrive at sensible suppositions. This is what I've tried to do here, along with the ASDB group. But in certain cases we have no actual information on what all these other classes look like, or whether they're starships, medical ships, freighters and so on. And this is where the speculation begins. But, on top of the class vessels that have been listed so far (about 50 officially) there are many more. They include other starship classes (the more minor ones) freighter, medical, escort, and transport ships... Listings of which can be found on the Stats Board.

In the listings in this section you'll find a selection of name only classes (NOC's), meaning the only official data we have is the class' name, such as Korolev Class, and also a few others we may know a little more about such as Sydney and Antares Classes

In the manifests of these ancillary classes are details outlining class prototypes, number of vessels constructed, and a few additional ship names from that class, and the conjectured class specs and statistics. Amongst them are speculative descriptions of what the particular class' fleet application might be. With some, we have finalized ASDB designs, with others there are generalized pictures due to knowledge of never before filmed physical models which do exist.

What we as a group have tried to do is make these designs appear plausible. Some starship designs that I've seen have immense quality, but are perhaps slightly exaggerated, meaning that perhaps someone's idea of a Hokule'a Class ship might be some kind of out of this world, super sleek, ultra futuristic design, but would it fit in with what we know about Starfleet? And what of the era? Hokule'a, for instance, might be a much older ship, their registries certainly denote this, perhaps they're frigates - who knows, but such a class ship would appear a lot more aged in design, and a lot lower tech than say ships of current Trek time. Hokule'a can assuredly be of older designation, judging from the scraps of information we have on it, so its design mirrors its era. So their positions in the fleet timeline, and their designs are just an indication of what these ships are and may look like if they were to be from the time conjectured -but unfortunately no official starship construction chronology exists.

In several instances, a ship has been mentioned that already existed conjecturally in this list! And incredibly, Cheyenne Class and Nova Class already existed as conjectural classes of mine in my conjectural list from some time ago as well.
