The Apollo classification was another experimental vessel, utilising newer, and more advanced computer hardware than ever before, replacing the older duotronic type processors and circuitry. Coming just after its sister class, the Ambassadors, The USS Apollo was the guinea pig for the first isolinear optical chips (IOC's) used in Starship computer systems, and it was a great success. So much so, that this class vessel was too sluggish and confined for the potential of isolinear chips. Computer interface, power and data distribution were significantly limited and antiquated in design by comparison to the performance attainable by IOC's, something not completely taken into account in the initial design - and the long range, short range, navigational and tactical sensor arrays incorporated inferior and insufficient design elements to fully compliment the supreme potential of IOC's.
This class of vessel was the subject of several deep rooted engineering and upgrade efforts over the subsequent years in an effort to keep the Apollo's in service. Out of the original 117, only 34 survive, a number as cadet training vehicles. Of the 27 lost most have either been destroyed, (primarily in the Cardassian wars) and in other cases decommissioned.

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
