This was the grand Federation Class Dreadnought. Built during the rather tumultuous 2250's and 60's, only 5 were constructed, and they were intended more as a standard bearer than an actual fleet necessity. The original Federation Class I's were built as Starfleet's best and most powerful ship at the very beginning of the Federation in the 2160's. A century on, the tradition was perpetuated with this, the second Federation Class. This was the most powerful, fastest, and offensively strongest ship in the fleet after the Constitution Class, and indeed, none of this class were ever lost. The Federations would be refitted some years later but would become obsolete when the Excelsior Class took over as the biggest and best in town.

Footnote:
-The Federation Class and the ship the Entente come from the sources of the Starfleet Technical Manual and comm chatter in TMP.
-I've changed a couple of the stats from the original specification sheet of the Federation. The tonnage was a fair degree lower than we would now expect for a ship of that size, and I also added a 3rd photon launcher. She's meant to be strong, right?

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
