31 of this strange class of ship were initially built. During the late 23rd century an arm of the Excelsior transwarp project amended the 4 nacelled Excelsior prototype to become a transwarp sister ship. Transwarp was a failure in the end, but from the blueprints of that failure the experimental Medusa Class hulls (originally with four nacelles) were requisitioned and did eventually see the light of day at the dawn of the 24th century, albeit with a reduced 3 nacelles.

This is a fairly old and obsolete starship class today. But 3 Medusas, as well as numerous similarly aged vessels of other classes which had served as cargo vessels and training ships were reactivated back into Starfleet control, and rearmed as part of an operation to boost ship numbers during the onslaught of the Dominion war. This program encompassed many older ships of various classes, such as Miranda and Constellation and several aging Excelsiors, to name only some. Only 3 of the old Medusas were worthy of recommissioning during this emergency, and after being pulled from various surplus depots they were hastily brought up to speed, and rearmed to take their place in the Destroyer Units of the 5th Fleet. Here's a few of the original 31, and those that were recommissioned.

Footnote *

-Here and on the Stats Board I have the Medusa prototype listed as having a registry of NX- 10156, even though the model say 7056. NX- 10156 is a recent adjustment, and I haven't yet got round to changing the model.

- Of course, this is all speculative, (reg number included) as virtually nothing is known about Medusa Class, it hasn't even been clearly identified on screen. But the model obviously exists...

-It is reasonably established now that the configuration of the nacelles on this ship is two up, one down.

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
