Today, what vessels remain in this class, and what was once classified as a Dreadnought, are now deployed on astronomical research missions, as it has since long been overshadowed by more modern and more advanced starships. Such vessels on common exploration duty may find themselves assigned to scout for, and survey, newly detected M Class worlds in uncharted space on the fringes of the Federation.

A second variant batch of Niagaras were commissioned in 2347, this time sporting a slightly elliptical saucer and upgraded nacelle type.

Footnote:

- Again there is a distinct inconsistency in registries here, as canon vessels Wellington and Princeton have numbers which would suggest they were built 30 years apart or so. The only explanation I can give is that in the mid 24th century a new batch of Niagara Class were constructed. This is only relevant though when one applies the sequential registry law... Also one presumes that these second batch Niagara's included the 'Galaxy Class style' nacelles, so my USS Niagara mesh - being a first batch vessel is incorrect. The now known Princeton, which had Galaxy-style nacelles was a second batch vessel. I would guess the first batch vessels had nacelles more resembling the Ambassador Class. But then again, the Princeton may have undergone serious upgrades and refits during the 2350s/60s, which included the installation of the latest and most advanced nacelles, utilizing Galaxy Class technology.

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
