The Renaissance Class was a new variant that superseded the Ambassador Class, but perpetuated the Ambassador family. Principal areas of improvement were the shields and new and more efficient launch sequences in the firing mechanisms of the Photon Torpedo launch tubes, allowing the rapid and controlled firing of up to 4 consecutive torpedoes in virtually a single volley. This class vessel also benefited from superior ODNs from previous classes, which greatly improved computer response times. The new shield innovations used on the Renaissance were 25%-35% more efficient than Ambassador grids. This made them a formidable opponent to any adversary, for this class was launched in the midst of a politically unsettled era.

Footnote *
-The USS Hokkaido is mentioned in the TNG Technical Manual, and was the last of the Renaissance Class starships to be constructed, which was in 2337. But it was one of the first to have an ASRV (Autonomous Survival and Recovery Vehicle) system installed, being an advanced and fully self-sustaining lifeboat.
-The Aries recently featured (although unseen) in the Starfleet battle group in Star Trek: Nemesis.

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.
The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
