As a stronger variant to the Korolev classification, the Rigel Class was a necessary addition to the growing fleet, answering the call for a quicker, sharper toothed, mid range vessel -with a primary objective of patrol and exploration, but also the defence of the Federation in what has turned out to be troublesome times in the Alpha Quadrant. The success of this class ship was particularly due to its extremely strong, and robustly armoured construction, and it was the first class to employ an innovative shielding system, termed ablative armour  -it was installed on two vessels during 2365 upgrades, which supplemented research on the technology during field trials of the prototype to Cheyenne Class, and the experimental Defiant Class. Rigel's success prompted various top brass officials in Starfleet to begin trials on a prototype vessel for a new and secret battle fleet. Nothing was commissioned at the time, but when serious need arose some while later, Defiant Class appeared, emerging from some of the original weapon designs of the previously planned battleship class...

Footnote *

- No actual model of this class is believed to exist. But it was supposedly portrayed as a wreck in the Wolf 359 Graveyard scene, but it has not been confirmed. Any fandom description of the appearance of this class can't be taken as canon, but it is generally understood to be a Nebula Class variant. Greg Jein and Mike Okuda are perhaps the only ones who can clarify the issue of the Rigel Class conundrum.

Myself, and some others at the ASDB are convinced that this ship is part of the Galaxy/Nebula family, (I believe it might have four nacelles) and as nice as Markus's design is, I personally do not believe that it would have an elliptical saucer lengthways, down the Z axis... That trend did not occur until some time later.

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
