The Saladin Class Destroyer was a famous and redoubtable type of ship hailing from the late 22nd century. Although only 36 were built they endured for a long time, more than a century, and the ongoing ships of her class saw a total of 3 refit operations, the last being in 2269. Several notable incidents and skirmishes involving the Tholians and the Klingon Empire involved the USS Saladin. That particular ship ended a long life of service when decommission in 2261.

Footnote:

-The reality of this class of ship existing in some shape or form in the Star Trek universe cannot really be questioned due to the appearance of the Saladin/Hermes Classes and the Ptolemy appearing on computer screen readouts in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I've split the picture (towards the top of the page) into three separate captures. Two show the Saladin from two angles, the third is the Ptolemy at the bottom.

-The Saladin was designed by Franz Joseph and features in the Starfleet Technical Manual.

-The 'virtually' already accepted and known registry of one of these ships, as seen in the schematic, is NCC-500. We don't know for sure whether this is the actual prototype, which would most likely be called the USS Saladin, but I have made that assumption here. I've put in a late 22nd time frame, simply because of the antiquity of the known registry.

-My 3D model of the conjectural USS Vostok shows a registry of NCC-479. It should really read NCC-579 or something. It was my error to give a registry lower than the speculated prototype. But at the time I was insisting the NCC-500 might well be a later ship and not necessarily the prototype, nut I have since changed my mind... :-)

-An interesting point of note: The ship in the Saladin schematic is NCC-500, which is only one point away from the old USS Antares NCC-501. Could this ancient Antares be of the Saladin Class, not the original Antares Class, if there was one???

KEY

O= Operational
OR= Operational after Refit or Repairs
DD= In Drydock for repairs or refit *
T= Training Vessel
U= Under construction prior to preliminary trials
D= Destroyed
Sc= Scrapped or Decommissioned
PD= Presumed Destroyed
M= Missing

*A ship would visit drydock for many reasons, including refits, repairs, servicing upgrades, preliminary trials and testing of new components, and spacedock for similar reasons, as well as crew rotation, reassignment, prep period before redeployment, and so forth.

The listed specifications for ship classes are partly hypothetical, but some data such as ship lengths, weapon stats and crew complements are in some cases canon. For an explanation on the specs, and what the Ship designations mean, see Spec Definitions.
